Arabia, part of the Ottoman Empire. To promote the technological and commercial progress of the declining empire, the Hamidiye Hijaz Railway is inaugurated, sponsored by Sultan Abdul Hamid II, who will be deposed by the Ottoman army the following year. The railway will be largely destroyed during the Arab Revolt of 1916 and will never be fully restored.
