Thomas Alva Edison developed the cinematograph and the kinetograph. It was a machine for viewing images and hearing synchronized sound, and a film camera, based on the cylindrical Kinetoscope he had designed years earlier. They recorded images on film at 10 frames per second, a photosensitive cellulose nitrate film made by George Eastman of Rochester, New York. These 70mm rolls were then cut in half to create the 35mm format that would later become the standard in cinematography. It exploited the persistence of vision in the human eye.
