Garibaldi and his Alpine Hunters confront the leading brigade of the Austrian division at Varese. Giacomo Medici and Enrico Cosenz, the two best commanders, fire on the Austrians passing on the road below, then attack their flank and force them to retreat. The retreat is due more to surprise than casualties, but it is, and it boosts the morale of Garibaldi’s men.
