Cadore Mountains. Volunteer mountaineers led by Pier Fortunato Calvi, armed with rifled carbines, typical of hunters, were joined by citizens who had formed a sort of civic guard, carrying out actions such as launching landslides and rockfalls against the Austrians. On May 27, they even managed to repel a massive attack by 8,000 Austrians, armed with up to nine cannons. But without reinforcements and logistical support, they were destined to succumb.
