Sunday. Milan. The soldiery is irritated by the difficulties in restoring order. Captain Kaas’s grenadiers enter the church of San Bartolomeo. The soldiers violate the convent’s seclusion zone. They encounter Don Mariano Lazzarini, who is preparing for Lent: “And with what words, with what sentiments will I present myself to you on this day…” He cannot continue: they kill him and attack his body with bayonets. Later, Don Cesare Airoldi Aliprandi takes his rifle from the wall and goes to war. He kills an officer and defeats the gunmen of the battery blocking Corso Monforte. Then he incites his brothers to build a barricade there. He will become an emblem of the revolt. In 1859, after the annexation of Lombardy to the dominions of Vittorio Emanuele, he will become monsignor of the Milan Cathedral.
