Murat, faced with the victorious Austrian army on Neapolitan soil, abdicates. Austrian General Bianchi, however, does not force his hand under the terms of the armistice. Murat will return to France to serve Napoleon, who, however, will not even welcome him. Then, leading a detachment of men, he disembarks at Pizzo in Calabria. In the town square, there are troops on exercise; he rushes among them, shouting “Long live Murat! Long live King Joachim!” but no one moves; he is arrested and then shot after a quick trial.
