France. The Constitution is enacted. It establishes the inviolability of property rights, the rights of the King of France, the right of association, and freedom of worship. Unfortunately, within two years, everything will go awry, and all four will be systematically violated: the Church’s property rights will be violated, associations such as monastic orders, guilds, and trade unions will be abolished, the king will be beheaded, and finally, in 1793, the cult of Reason will be sanctioned, complete with icons, rites, and martyrs, and the worship of God will be prohibited.
