Battle of Negapatam, India. Eleven British warships under Hughes and eleven French ships under De Suffren confront each other. The British lose 310 sailors killed or wounded, and the French 779, but the result is inconclusive. The French had hoped until the last moment for Dutch intervention. The British secure the salvation of the eastern part of the British Empire, which in the French view should have capitulated like the American colonies.
