The Portuguese dominated the pepper market, replacing the Venetians in this respect. However, their attitude was the opposite of the free market of Venetian rule: the Portuguese followed the lead of the Mamluk sultans by imposing a monopoly, selling pepper at the highest price they could obtain. To maintain this monopoly, however, they had to maintain strict control over all import routes for pepper from the East.
