The smallpox epidemic among the Indian kingdoms of the Mississippi Plains (present-day Midwest) predates the physical arrival of Europeans by several years, as the germs were brought into the interior by Indian traders. By the time Europeans arrived, the kingdoms had disappeared or were in complete collapse.
