Smallpox epidemic among the Indian kingdoms of the Mississippi Plains (present-day Midwest), caused by the arrival of the Spanish along the coast. Note that the epidemic preceded the physical arrival of Europeans by several years, as the germs were brought inland by Indian traders. This means that by the time the Europeans arrived, the kingdoms had disappeared or were in complete collapse.
