Britain. Caratacus, leader of the rebels against the Romans, takes refuge in Wales and leads the revolt. Defeated by the Romans under governor Publius Ostorius Scapula, he flees to the territory of the Brigantes, whose queen Cartimandua is allied with the Romans, but whose husband Venutius is the rebels’ focal point in the region. Caratacus, however, is betrayed by the queen and handed over to the Romans, who bring him before the Emperor in Rome. The Emperor pardons him and his family. He lives under house arrest in a country residence near Rome.
