5 – 15 August 1317

Ferrara had just returned to papal control after only seven years. But in 1317, when a vicar of Rome killed a young Ferrarese man from the Bocchimpani family, a revolt broke out. On August 5, 1317, the besieged papal garrison surrendered. On August 15, 1317, the new rulers were the Este family, who were promptly excommunicated and interdicted by the Holy See. The Este family thus moved firmly into the Ghibelline camp.
