Mesopotamia. First evidence of state organization, which generally involved a complex social structure and the maintenance of an army. In Mesoamerica, this transition occurred around 300 BC, in the Andes, China, and Southeast Asia around the 1st century BC, and in West Africa around the 10th century AD.
