Alexander the Great arrives in Samarkand, where he is still remembered, and signs of it are everywhere. His name here is Iskander Khan. The city of Termez, near the border with present-day Afghanistan, still bears the name given to him by Macedonian troops. In the Pamir Mountains, there are still villages whose people are said to be descended from his soldiers.
