Native to China, where it has been cultivated for over 5,000 years, the peach tree (Prunus persica vulgaris) later spread to Syria, Persia (from which it takes its name), and Greece, where it was already known by the 4th century BC. This crop arrived in Italy in the 1st century BC, while it was introduced to America by Spanish colonizers.
