First archaeological evidence of nation-states taking prisoners. (Previously, hunter-gatherer tribes, lacking sufficient means of subsistence for all, killed them.) Mesopotamian states solved the problem of using prisoners for useful labor by gouging out their eyes to blind them and thus prevent them from escaping, and then making them perform manual labor that required their sense of touch, such as making ropes or wicker baskets.
