Mesoamerica (present-day Mexico). The first evidence of state organization in the Americas, which generally involved a complex social structure and the maintenance of an army, is present. In Mesopotamia, the transition occurred 3,400 years earlier; in the Andes, China, and Southeast Asia, it occurred around the 1st century BC; and in West Africa around the 10th century AD.
