Venezuela. The socialism of the Chávez-Maduro era has brought catastrophic economic ruin, accompanied by human suffering, despite its enormous oil wealth (Venezuela has the largest oil reserves in the world). GDP collapsed by 35% from 2013 to 2017. This is the worst economic collapse ever seen in the Americas or Western Europe. Inflation reached 18,000% in early 2018, and then 1,290,000% by the end of the same year. Emigration to Colombia has reached 5,000 people per day over the same period. Infant mortality has surpassed that of civil war-torn Syria.
