Nigeria. In a tremendous escalation of violence, Boko Haram Islamic extremists kill several thousand people (2,000 in the first six months of the year alone). Hundreds of women are kidnapped. The regular army occasionally manages to retake attacked towns and villages. The civil war continues in northeastern Nigeria.
