Nineteenth-century scientists discovered that the intermediate distillate of petroleum could be useful as fuel for oil lamps, where previously whale blubber, for example, had been used. However, they dismissed the more volatile fraction of the distillation process, what we call gasoline, as completely useless, discarded as an unfortunate and unwanted byproduct.
