Two teams of world-class supernova hunters, led by Saul Perlmutter of Lawrence Berkeley Laboratories in California and Brian Schmidt and Robert Kirschner of Australia, discover that the expansion of the universe is accelerating even now and that it began a few billion years ago. This hypothesis is confirmed by the High-z Supernova Project group led by Adam Riess of Harvard University.
