Iodized salt is banned in India. It is made by adding iodine to table salt to prevent birth defects and mental retardation, caused by iodine deficiency. In India, it is mistakenly considered an interference by Western science, which also causes tumors and “bad moods,” and was therefore banned in 1998, to the astonished eyes of Indian doctors. Consumption of iodized salt dropped by 13%, and cases of birth defects and mental retardation rose by the same proportion. The law was overturned in 2005, banning non-iodized salt.
