American biologists Thomas Cech and Sidney Altman received the Nobel Prize for their studies in the 1980s, which led to the discovery that certain types of RNA can behave like enzymes towards themselves by cutting themselves in two and mending themselves, that is, they can multiply without the help of proteins; this confirms the RNA World hypothesis, that is, first the birth of RNA, then of proteins.
