New Zealand mathematician Vaughan Frederick Randal Jones, an expert in knot theory, invented the Jones Polynomial, the knot invariant. This won him the Fields Medal in 1990. This paved the way for other knot invariants, including the generalization called HOMFLY-PT, from the authors’ initials. Nevertheless, a systematic classification of all possible knots remains an unattainable dream for mathematicians.
