Harvard professor Ezra Vogel publishes the book “Japan as Number One,” in which he predicts that Japan will become the world’s leading economy within a few years. This doesn’t materialize; in fact, the very next year, in 1980, Japan’s growth rate plummets and never recovers to its previous pace.
