China. In 1979, the one-child policy was introduced, suggested by rocket scientist Song Jian, who became the architect of this policy. It limited Han families to only one child (two if the first is a girl). It was abandoned in 2015. Its impact on population growth and on Chinese society remains controversial and debated.
