London. The Computed Tomography (CT) device, which produces a series of X-ray images of the human body, is brought for testing at Atkinson Morley Hospital. It had been invented and then developed in the previous years by Godfrey Hounsfield of the English company EMI (Electric and Musical Industries). The first patient was a woman with a suspected tumor in her left frontal lobe. By 1980, over 3 million CT scans had been performed worldwide. By the beginning of the 21st century, over 70 million scans were performed each year.
