Grace Hopper, a software pioneer, was recalled to active duty in the US Navy at the age of 60, tasked with standardizing the use of COBOL and validating compilers. A special vote by Congress granted her permission to extend her duties beyond retirement age. She retired in 1986 at the age of 79, with the rank of admiral.
