Twenty years earlier, Alpher and Herman had already developed an idea by George Gamow, calculating that the ratio of the density of the Universe to the cube of its temperature is a cosmic constant. They now calculate the current background radiation at 3.5K ± 1.0K, which corresponds to Penzias and Wilson’s discovery. The background radiation contains too many photons to be produced by any known radiation source.
