Marshall Niremberg discovers that the basic building blocks of the Escherichia coli genetic code are the same as those of frogs and guinea pigs: a universal code that confirms the common origin of all living things, already predicted a century earlier by Charles Darwin. For these discoveries, Niremberg will receive the Nobel Prize the following year.
