After the tragic Apollo 1 accident, Betty Grissom, Gus’s wife, tired of being ignored by the government, sued North American, winning the case and receiving $350,000 in damages and $300,000 to be split between Mrs. White and Mrs. Chaffee. Pat White committed suicide in 1983, while organizing a reunion of astronaut wives and after undergoing surgery to remove a tumor.
