Philosopher Karl Popper published The Poverty of Historicism, in which he criticized the social sciences that aspire to predict history through alleged laws, patterns, cycles, or tendencies. He criticized Marxism and popular beliefs such as the alleged Second Coming of Christ or the inevitability of human progress. History is the product of free human choices, contingent and unpredictable.
