The U-2 flights made the Soviets quite nervous (to put it mildly). Up to 57 fighter jets were launched against a single U-2, but failed to reach it. A naïve technique was even adopted: entire squadrons of dozens of jets, clustered closely beneath the U-2, attempted to obscure its view of the ground. A tactic the CIA jokingly called “aluminum clouds.”
