Bruno Pontecorvo, previously under investigation by a McCarthyist commission in the United States, accepted a transfer from Canada to a professorship at the University of Liverpool (made to him so as to keep him away from classified information and research); he never arrived in Liverpool, disappeared into thin air, and then reappeared in Moscow in 1955, declaring that he had already been a Soviet citizen for three years.
