Lund, Sweden. Milton Humason receives an honorary doctorate in astronomy from Lund University. He is the first person to go directly from a fifth-grade degree to a PhD. Hired as a mule driver during the construction of the Mount Wilson Observatory in the United States, he later became Edwin Hubble’s meticulous assistant in his observations.
