The Englishman B. Thomas discovered that the friction of water in pipes could be significantly reduced by using small (1%) quantities of polymers dissolved in the water; the long polymer chains, in fact, discourage the formation of vortices and turbulence that would slow the flow (in practice they move the onset of chaos to a higher speed).
