782,582 Poles were forcibly transferred from Soviet Ukraine to Poland. Another 231,152 were expelled from Belarus and 162,244 from Lithuania, for a total of 1.2 million. Poland, with the Soviets’ blessing, responded in kind, repatriating 482,000 Ukrainians. At the end of 1946, to halt these movements, the Soviets closed the border with Poland.
