Konrad Zuse created the Z3, the first functioning general-purpose programmable digital computer. He proposed it to the Wehrmacht, requiring two years of development to perfect it. The invention was rejected because “Germany would have already won the war by then.” His prototype was destroyed during the Allied bombing of Berlin.
