Philosopher Erich Fromm wrote Escape from Freedom, in which he attempts to explain the rise of fascism. He argues that every increase in freedom is also an increase in loneliness: the initial connection with others is lost, and a sense of insecurity, helplessness, doubt, loneliness, and anguish is acquired.
