Hungarian Laszlo Biró, after studying medicine, practicing hypnosis, racing, and journalism, along with his brother György, invented the ballpoint pen as we know it today. The invention actually dates back to 1888, when John L. Loud invented it, but he never commercialized it (it also leaked a lot of ink). The Biró patent was registered in Hungary in 1938 and in Argentina, where they fled to escape Nazism, in 1943.
