The Hormel company develops Spiced Ham, or Spam, in cans, which, during World War II, will be distributed in massive quantities (5 billion cans) to soldiers and to alleviate hunger among civilians in Europe. It will become so common that, decades later, it will become synonymous with “junk mail” during the Fourth Industrial Revolution. A famous Monty Python sketch featured a restaurant with the following menu: “Spam, sausage, spam, spam, bacon, spam, tomato, and spam.”
