In the basement of an apartment in an unremarkable Iowa town, John Vincent Atanasoff built a binary computer with memory, using vacuum tubes, but not programmable. After considering base 100, then base e (Napier’s number), he settled on base 2. He demonstrated it publicly in late 1939.
