Fischer and Tropsch of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Chemistry marketed, on behalf of Brabag Germany, synthetic gasoline produced from carbon monoxide and hydrogen. During the Nazi war effort, this type of gasoline accounted for 9% of the military’s gasoline and 25% of the gasoline used in German automobiles. Fischer and Tropsch had previously filed several patents, such as U.S. Patent 1,746,464, dated 1926, published in 1930.
