Enrico Fermi bombarded uranium with neutrons to observe the high-energy alpha particles they emitted; in the experiment, he took care to shield the uranium with inert material to absorb the low-energy alpha particles. Had he not done so, he would likely have discovered nuclear fission several years before real history, and moreover in a country, Fascist Italy, closely linked to Nazi Germany.
