Russian cosmologist George Gamow attempts to escape the USSR through what he considers the least guarded border: the southern tip of the Crimean Peninsula, attempting to land in Turkey. He and his wife Rho buy a kayak and one night they start rowing. The wind blows them off course, and after several hours they find themselves in a fishing port. Unfortunately, they aren’t Turkish. They are Russians, 100 kilometers away on the same coast they had departed from. Fortunately, they don’t doubt the scientist’s version that they were lost. The Gamows successfully escape two years later. They never return to the USSR.
