Japan invades Manchuria. The territories south of the Amur River are called Manchukuo. For years, Japan will ponder how to continue its imperial expansion: northward through Russian Siberia, rich in raw materials, or eastward across the ocean toward Hawaii. Had they attacked the Soviet Union, already besieged by Hitler, instead of provoking the United States into the war, history would have taken a very different path.
