Carl Bosch perfected a process invented by Fritz Haber, which used methane and steam to extract nitrogen from the air and converted it into fertilizer on an industrial scale, effectively replacing huge quantities of bird droppings, which were previously used to provide nitrogen to poor soils. This invention would save 2.7 billion (billion!) lives in the 20th century.
