Croatian geologist Andrija Mohorovicic, while examining the readings of a seismometer after an earthquake in Zagreb, noticed that some shock waves penetrated the planet to a certain (shallow) depth and then bounced back to the surface, thus discovering the existence of the Earth’s mantle; this has since been known as the Mohorovicic Discontinuity.
