John Ambrose Fleming, a former student of Maxwell and a former consultant to Edison and later Marconi, patented the diode, or Fleming Valve. It would spark a technological revolution. By 1911, the triode, derived from Fleming’s diode, was used in oscillators, frequency modulators, radio, telecommunications, radar, and finally computers. The electronics industry took off.
